Food price inflation in Russia at 6.2% in 2013, government says; prices for dairy products, cheese and eggs rose 1.5%, fish and seafood prices up 1.4%, butter and fats prices up 0.8%, fruit prices up 0.6%

MOSCOW , January 29, 2014 () – Food price inflation in Russia was 6.2% in 2013, 340% higher than the 1.4% increase in the European Union, Russia's Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) said.

Food prices in Russia increased 0.9% in December alone compared with an increase of 0.8% in the EU.

In both Russia and the EU, the biggest food price increases in December were for vegetables, up 4.3% and 6.3% respectively.

Prices for dairy products, cheese and eggs rose 1.5% in Russia (compared with 0.5% in the EU). Prices for fish and seafood were up 1.4% (unchanged), butter and fats - up 0.8% (down 0.5%), fruit - up 0.6% (down 0.4%), bakery products and buckwheat - up 0.3% (up 0.2%), meat and meat products - up 0.2% (up 0.1%) and sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and candy - up 0.1% (down 0.3%).

Overall inflation in Russia amounted to 6.5% in 2013 compared with 1.0% in the EU.
