– Sales at restaurants in Japan in 2013 rose 0.7 percent from the previous year, increasing for the second straight year, amid economic recovery, an industry body said Monday.
The number of restaurants covered by the Japan Food Service Association's survey increased 1.4 percent while the number of customers fell 0.1 percent. Spending per customer rose 0.8 percent.
Sales at family restaurants increased 3.3 percent with customer numbers up 1.6 percent.
But sales at fast-food restaurants dropped 0.5 percent, with sales at hamburger and other Western fast-food outlets falling 3.9 percent.
In December alone, overall restaurant sales rose 1.6 percent from a year earlier.
