The European Union’s (EU) primary energy production from solid biomass rose to 82.3 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) in 2012, according to EurObserv’ER‘s annual Solid Biomass Barometer, Biomass Magazine reported on Jan. 23.
The bloc consumed about 15.1 million tonnes of wood pellets in 2012, and wood pellet production rose to 10.5 million tonnes, up 10.5% from 9.5 million tonnes the previous year, the report noted. Imports represented an estimated roughly 30% of the EU’s total wood pellet consumption in 2012, with U.S. exports amounting to about 1.8 million tonnes, while Canada accounted for an estimated 1.4 million tonnes.
Global wood pellet consumption was estimated at 22.4 million tonnes-24.5 million tonnes.
EU electricity production from solid biomass amounted to 79.5 terawatt hours (TWh), and it consumed 68 Mtoe of heat from solid biomass.
The top EU member states in both solid biomass production and consumption in 2012 were Germany (which produced and consumed 11.8 Mtoe of solid biomass), France (10.5 Mtoe) and Sweden (9.5 Mtoe). The United Kingdom (U.K.) consumed 2.5 Mtoe of solid biomass, but produced only 1.8 Mtoe.
The top EU member states in terms of electricity production from solid biomass were Germany (12.2 TWh, including 6.9 TWh from combined heat and power plants), Finland (10.4 TWh of power, including 8657 TWh from combined heat and power plants) and Sweden (10.2 TWh at all combined heat and power plants).
Sweden, Finland and Denmark were the top producers of heat from solid biomass, while France was the biggest consumer of heat from solid biomass.
