The number of people employed full-time in Scotland’s renewable energy sector rose 5% year-over-year to 11,695 in 2013, exceeding Scotland’s overall employment growth, according to a report, Scottish Renewables reported on Jan. 14.
Potential barriers to future growth include connecting facilities to the grid, planning barriers and electricity sector market reforms, said Scottish Renewables Senior Policy Manager Joss Blamire, citing a study commissioned by the group. As part of the study, independent researchers surveyed more than 540 companies.
The most notable sources of employment within the Scottish renewable energy sector were onshore wind with a 39% market share and offshore wind with 21%, followed by marine and bioenergy, which were tied at 9%.
Fifty-four percent of surveyed companies indicated they would be looking to boost employment over the next 12 months, while 42% expected employment to hold steady. Only 1.6% of respondents expected their employment to decrease during this period, the study found.
