Pioneer Hi Bred International issued US patent for 'maize hybrid X85B703'

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia , December 10, 2013 () – United States Patent no. 8,604,273, issued on Dec. 10, was assigned to Pioneer Hi Bred International Inc (Johnston, Iowa).

"Maize hybrid X85B703" was invented by Gustavo Marcelo Garcia (Stratford, Canada), Lori Lisa Carrigan (Spicer, Minn.) and Steven Paul King (Stratford, Canada).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A novel maize variety designated X85B703 and seed, plants and plant parts thereof, produced by crossing Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. proprietary inbred maize varieties. Methods for producing a maize plant that comprises crossing hybrid maize variety X85B703 with another maize plant. Methods for producing a maize plant containing in its genetic material one or more traits introgressed into X85B703 through backcross conversion and/or transformation, and to the maize seed, plant and plant part produced thereby. This invention relates to the maize variety X85B703, the seed, the plant produced from the seed, and variants, mutants, and minor modifications of maize variety X85B703. This invention further relates to methods for producing maize varieties derived from maize variety X85B703."

The patent was filed on Feb. 21, 2012, under Application No. 13/400,698.
