China pulp imports inch up 0.5% year-over-year in October while falling 2.0% month-over-month, to 1.378 million tonnes; imports increase 1.8% year-to-date, to 13.827 million tonnes

LOS ANGELES , December 6, 2013 () – China imported 1,377,682 tonnes of pulp in October 2013, up 0.5% from October 2012 but declining 2.0% from the September 2013 figure, according to China Customs Bureau statistics.

For the first 10 months of 2013, the imports totalled 13,826,536 tonnes, which was 1.8% higher than the year-ago period.

This is the third consecutive month in which the overall year-to-date figure has been in the positive ranks, whereas from February through July, the figures were negative, though less so as the months unfolded.

The imports to China have surpassed 1 million tonnes in every month since August 2011; in 2011 they were above 1 million tonnes in every month except June and July.

In October 2013, bleached softwood kraft pulp (BSKP) imports totalled 474,220 tonnes, falling 14.2% month-over-month and declining 13.0% year-over-year, while bleached hardwood kraft pulp (BHKP) imports surpassed 600,000 tonnes for perhaps the first time ever, reaching 600,388 tonnes, an increase of 15.9% month-over-month and of 13.4% year-over-year.


Year-to-date and compared to the first 10 months of 2012, BHKP imports reached 5,376,017 tonnes, up 8.3%, while BSKP imports of 5,296,196 tonnes dipped 3.4%.

In October 2013, China imported 227,621 tonnes of Brazilian bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp (BEKP), increasing 99.5% year-over-year and 34.7% month-over-month. So far it this year the imports reached 1,923,547 tonnes, for a 6.3% increase from the year-ago period.

China imported 194,974 tonnes of BHKP from Indonesia in October 2013, down 4.6% year-over-year but up 26.4% month-over-month. From January through October, China imported 1,676,788 tonnes, increasing 30.4% from the same months in 2012.

The imports of Canadian BSKP, or northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK), totalled 196,273 tonnes in October 2013, were off 13.0% year-over-year and 14.2% month-over-month. The January-through-October total of 1,891,853 tonnes fell 3.0%.

From Finland, China imported 34,722 tonnes of NBSK in October 2013, declining 19.6% year-over-year and 55.0% month-over-month. The year-to-date total of 645,424 tonnes dropped 0.4%.

In October 2013 China imported 48,692 tonnes of unbleached softwood kraft pulp (UKP), falling 3.7% year-over-year but increasing 50.3% from September 2013. The cumulative total of 436,448 tonnes fell 20.3% from the year-ago period.

The October 2013 imports of mechanical and semi-chemical pulp, also known as high-yield pulp or bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp (BCTMP) totalled 99,649 tonnes, declining 13.6% from October 2012 and down 16.5% from September 2013. So far this year, the total was 1,183,578 tonnes, for a 1.7% decline.

The dissolving pulp imports in October 2013 totalled 153,124 tonnes, increasing 20.4% from a year ago but decreasing 15.8% from September 2013. The 10-month total of 1,518,822 tonnes increased 13.7% from the first 10 months of 2012.
