According to Agricultural Minister Sharad Pawar, India, which is emerging as one of the major players in the global agricultural market, this year exported agricultural produce worth Rs 2.32 lakh crore.
With a population of 1.2 billion to feed, India itself has a huge domestic food consumption needs. After meeting the domestic consumption needs and stocking of food grains, the remaining quantity is made available for exports.
According to Pawar, India currently is the leading producer of milk, pulses, jute and is second globally in the list as far as production of rice, wheat, sugarcane, groundnuts, vegetable foods and cotton are concerned.
"It is also the leading producer of spices and plantation crops as well as livestock, fisheries and poultry. India is thus emerging as a major player in the international market," Pawar said.
Pawar acknowledged the work of the farming community, scientists, technologists and the state governments for India's rising presence in the global agricultural market.
