ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland , October 30, 2013 (press release) – To support the establishment of a new wood treatment facility, the Provincial Government has provided $1,650,000 to Marwood Ltd., a manufacturer of wood products. The announcement was made today in Jamestown by the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development.

“Supporting new business development is vital to the growth and sustainability of rural Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister Johnson. “This investment of over $1.6 million supports Marwood Ltd.’s new Jamestown location, allowing them to meet their increasing market demands while also revitalizing the former Jamestown Lumber location. This funding will also assist Marwood with decreasing operating costs and turnaround time, adding to their competitive edge and to the value they offer their customers.”

Operational since September, Marwood Ltd.’s Jamestown facility primarily uses lumber produced by local sawmills. Utilizing modern technology and complying with the latest environmental standards, Marwood Ltd. also uses the pre-existing equipment from the former lumber facility and in the future will incorporate additional wood producing equipment to support and sustain the market growth of treated wood products.

“Marwood has been supplying products to customers in the province for over 25 years and the addition of the Jamestown location will allow us to provide better customer service while supporting the local Sawmill Industry,” said Mike O’Donnell, President of Marwood Ltd. “The support from the Provincial Government has allowed us to significantly grow our presence in the province and has revitalized the Jamestown facility. We look forward to a bright and productive future here in the province.”

Marwood Ltd. is an Atlantic Canadian, family owned company based out of Fredericton, New Brunswick. The company operates facilities across Atlantic Canada and is a manufacturer of value added treated wood products including utility poles, construction timber, deck accessories, painted wood siding, and wood pellets.

“This is a great day for Jamestown and the District of Bonavista South,” said Glen Little, MHA for Bonavista South. “Not only will the revitalization of this production plant create employment for the area, it will create spin-offs for local businesses within the industry, or with a need for this product. Once again, this is evidence of our government’s commitment to the growth and future of rural Newfoundland and Labrador.”

The Jamestown location is Marwood’s first Newfoundland and Labrador facility.
