TransCore's Canadian Freight Index falls 5% in September from August, rises 9% year-over-year, as intra-Canada volume reaches highest levels of year

TORONTO , October 25, 2013 (press release) – TransCore Link Logistics Canadian Freight Index showed a nine percent year-over-year increase for September while month-over-month load volumes decreased by five percent.

Third quarter saw a decrease of five percent from second quarter; however, volumes increased by one percent when compared to the first quarter and by two percent compared to the third quarter last year. The high point for load volumes this quarter was seen in July and the highest point year-to-date was seen in May.

Although equipment postings in September decreased by five percent from the previous, the year-over-year postings jumped by 15 percent compared to September 2012.

Top equipment volumes in September were: dry vans at 52 percent, reefers at 23 percent and flatbeds at 19 percent. The equipment-to-load ration decreased in September to 2.56 from 2.57 in the previous month.

Intra-Canada volume, which was at the highest levels year-to-date, contributed 28 percent of the total volumes for September and were two percent above August levels. Cross-border loads destined for provinces within Canada accounted for 67 percent of overall volume.

Quebec 17 percent
Atlantic 2 percent

Ontario 32 percent
Quebec 17 percent

Western 34 percent
Ontario 37 percent
Quebec 26 percent
Atlantic 3 percent
