Brazil's furniture exports inch down in value, imports rise, between January and July, amid upswing in Brazilian furniture retail sales; H1 furniture production up in volume

LOS ANGELES , October 1, 2013 () – Brazilian furniture exports reached a value of US$394.8 million from January to July, down 0.3% year-over-year, while imports were up at US$ 770.6 millions, IAFP Alliance (the International Alliance of Furniture Publications) reported on Sept. 30.

Research by the Industrial Marketing and Studies Institute (IEMI) with the support of Rio Grande do Sul Furniture Industries Assn. (Movergs) noted that furniture sales in Brazil (including electronics) grew in volume by more than 12% in July and in value by 13.2%.

From January to July, furniture retail was up 4.8% in volume and 7.1% in value when compared with the same period of 2012, IAFP reported.

Furniture production volumes were up 2.1% in July, and 4.5% up for the first half of the year, although the number of people employed in the furniture industry fell by 1.1% in July. The sector’s productivity, however, was up 13.2% for the month and 9.8% for the year, according to IAFP
