BEIJING , September 30, 2013 () – The unit output of high-yield rice or so-called "super rice" in China registered a record high of 14.82 metric tons (tonnes) per hectare (ha), the Ministry of Agriculture said on Sunday.

In April this year the ministry began a project aiming to raise "super rice" yield to 15 tonnes per ha.

The country's "super rice" planting area amounted to 8.07 million hectares in 2012, with unit yield up 900 kg per ha over common rice.

Rice takes up about 40 percent of China's total grain production. It is the staple food for more than 60 percent of China's 1.3 billion population. (Edited by Liu Xiaoyun, liuxy08@xinhua.org)
