CINCINNATI , September 27, 2013 (press release) – Manny Garcia chosen to lead multi-platform approach

The E. W. Scripps Company (SSP) has named Manny Garcia, executive editor and general manager of el Nuevo Herald, the Spanish-language daily in Miami, Fla., as editor of the Naples Daily News, effective Oct. 21.

Under Garcia's leadership, el Nuevo Herald has grown into a multi-platform news operation that includes online, print, television and radio partnerships and special publications. He most recently led the successful launch of a free Spanish-language weekly publication targeting 68,000 readers.

As executive editor and general manager, Garcia helped lead advertising, circulation, staff development and community outreach initiatives while leading a newsroom of 50 full-time journalists and more than 100 freelancers.

In 2011, El Nuevo Herald and The Miami Herald were joint Pulitzer finalists for their coverage of the 2010 Haiti earthquake – a first for a Spanish-language news operation. Garcia's team recently collaborated with The Toronto Star on an international series that exposed sex tourism from Canada to Cuba, which has led to reforms in both countries.

"Manny Garcia is one of the nation's pre-eminent investigative journalists and newsroom leaders," said Mizell Stewart III, vice president of content for the Scripps newspaper division. "His passion for great storytelling, his ability to build outstanding newsroom teams and his focus on serving news consumers on multiple platforms is a great addition to Scripps."
He replaces Phil Lewis, who retired in July.

Before joining el Nuevo Herald in 2009, Garcia served as senior news editor for The Miami Herald, where he oversaw all news operations.

Garcia joined The Miami Herald in 1990 as a Neighbors reporter covering police and worked his way up through a series of local news reporting posts before joining the Herald's investigative team. He won numerous awards for investigative reporting, including a Goldsmith Prize and an IRE Award and shared two Pulitzer Prize-winning entries, one for Miami's voter fraud scandal and the second for the Elian Gonzalez raid.

He serves on the boards of Investigative Reporters and Editors, the American Society of News Editors and the Florida Society of News Editors.

He is a graduate of Florida International University's School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Before starting his journalism career, Garcia sold shampoo, drove a truck and worked as an emergency medical technician. He is married with two children.
