LINNICH, Germany , September 25, 2013 (press release) – combidome, the bottle made from cardboard from SIG Combibloc, has now been honoured with the renowned Beverage Innovation Award. The jury of international experts was convinced by the new carton, which combines an unusual shape with exceptional functionality.

The Beverage Innovation Award recognises outstanding innovations in the categories Beverages, Brand and Business, Ingredients, Packaging, Sustainability, and Marketing and Communication. Since 2003, the coveted prize has been awarded annually by FoodBev.com. This year, 370 applications were submitted by manufacturers and suppliers in the beverage and liquid food industry from 40 countries.

Hanno Bertling, Global Product Manager for combidome at SIG Combibloc, accepted the award for combidome at an event at the drinktec trade fair, where he expressed his delight: “The Beverage Innovation Award makes us very proud. For us, the verdict of the highly regarded expert jury is a confirmation that combidome is something totally new and unprecedented, and is perceived as such in professional circles. With combidome, we’ve brought out a new packaging solution that combines the best features of a bottle with the best features of a carton pack. This carton pack is as easy to use as a bottle. At the same time, it protects beverages as only a carton can. In addition, combidome has all the environmental benefits that make a beverage carton unique in the packaging mix”.

The Beverage Innovation Award is handed out by FoodBev.com in cooperation with UNESDA (Union of European Soft Drinks Association) and wafg (Wirtschaftvereinigung Alkoholfreie Getränke e.V. – Germany’s trade association for non-alcoholic beverages).

This year’s international expert jury was made up of 18 experts, representing all specialist divisions of the prize categories and bringing with them wide-ranging experience. The jury’s unanimous verdict on combidome was: “This is clever. It looks like a bottle and is easy to hold and pour from – but it is actually a carton. It provides a great canvas for branding, with a unique shape – and offers appeal for consumers with its ease of use, enhancing the pouring experience. Claiming the best CO2 performance in the category, combidome delivers a clear and easy to understand sustainability message too”.

SIG Combibloc is one of the world’s leading system suppliers of carton packaging and filling machines for beverages and food. In 2012 the company achieved a turnover of 1,620 million Euro with around 4,950 employees in 40 countries. SIG Combibloc is part of the New Zealand based Rank Group.
