Revised: Startup of Montes del Plata 1.3 million tonnes/year eucalyptus pulp mill in Uruguay, jointly owned by Arauco and Stora Enso, delayed to 4Q from late 3Q; main technology contractors unable to complete their work on time, Arauco says

SANTIAGO, Chile , September 11, 2013 (press release) – Industry Intelligence Editor’s Note: Subsequent to publication earlier today of the press release shown below, an executive with Ceulosa Arauco y Constitución SA (Arauco) told Industry Intelligence that Arauco and Stora Enso Oyj have clarified “misleading information (that) was published in some Finnish press saying the startup was delayed to February, even March.” He said the official information, as clarified by Arauco and Stora Enso, is that the startup has been delayed beyond what until a few weeks ago was planned for the third quarter, and that the new date now “is the 4th quarter, all going to [the] current timetable and [there are] no more labour issues” to interrupt the plan.


Montes del Plata pulp project timetable updated

The mill start-up process of the joint venture pulp project of Stora Enso and ARAUCO, Montes del Plata in Uruguay, has been estimated to begin at the end of the third quarter 2013.

The mill site is 92 percent complete and the commissioning of certain areas has already begun. However, the main technology contractors have recently informed Montes del Plata that they will not be able to complete their work according to the agreed timetable. Montes del Plata is supporting these contractors and all local stakeholders in order to expedite the startup process.
