TORONTO , May 30, 2013 () – The Court of Appeal for Ontario has refused to throw out a $50 billion lawsuit filed by the province against several tobacco companies. The panel said it sees no legal reason to overturn a lower court judge's ruling that the case should proceed. Ontario launched a lawsuit against 14 tobacco companies in September 2009 in an effort to recoup past and present health-care costs related to smoking.
