LONDON , December 18, 2012 () – The prices in supermarket "budget" ranges have risen sharply in the past year, as customers struggle to pay for their weekly shopping.

Millions of families have been forced to tighten their belts in the downturn by switching to the cheaper ranges. But figures showed some products are now costing nearly double.

Research by BrandView.co.uk, an online price comparison site, found 153 from 353 – more than 43 per cent – of Tesco Everyday Value products available last week cost more than their equivalent in 2011. Almost 100 were found to be cheaper.

Price rises were recorded on produce including frying steak, up from £2.96 to £5.49 per kg and a 500g bag of grated cheese, up from £2.18 to £3.

Among Sainsbury's Basics lines, 137 of 217 products – about 41 per cent – were more expensive while 80 were cheaper. Only Asda had lowered prices in more products than it put up.

A Tesco spokesman told trade magazine The Grocer, that most of its Everyday Value lines had stayed the same or become cheaper but "rising costs and food inflation mean some products have increased in price slightly". Sainsbury's said it worked hard to keep prices low.
