Russian farmers gather grain and legumes from 84.7% of all territories under crops as of Nov. 1, government data shows; potatoes gathered from 97.6% of all farmlands and vegetables harvested from 95.3% of all territories

MOSCOW , November 19, 2012 (Itar-Tass) – Russia's farmers gathered grain and legumes from 84.7 percent of all territories under crops as of November 1, 2012, the Russian State Statistics Service wrote in its regular report, adding that of them corn for crops is harvested from 70.3 percent of farmlands.

According to the Statistics Service, potatoes gathered from 97.6 percent of all farmlands and vegetables harvested from 95.3 percent of all territories. Besides, sugar beet garnered in from 80 percent of farmlands (as compared to 74 percent in 2011) and sunflower crops gathered from 86.5 percent of all areas (as against to 73.4 percent in the preceding year), the document wrote.

Proceeding from the Statistics' report, the Russian agricultural organisations of all categories (state-run farmsteads, farmers and peasants) harvested 72.3 million tonnes of grain in the weight before drying and cleaning, as well as gathered 7.2 million tonnes of sunflower crops, 32.7 million tonnes of sugar beet, 28.8 million tonnes of potatoes and 13.5 million tonnes of vegetables.

This year's grain harvest is estimated at 24.5 percent less than in the preceding year. The harvests of sugar beet and sunflower crops are 4.1 percent and 5.1 percent respectively smaller than in 2012. The harvest of potato decreased by 9.9 percent as against last year, while the harvest of vegetables edged up by 0.1 percent, the statistics said.

Traditionally, the major share (76.8 percent) of grain harvest, as well as sugar beet (87.2 percent and sunflower crops (72 percent) was grown in large agricultural companies, while the biggest part of potatoes (79.6 percent) and vegetables (70.8 percent) was planted in the private farms, the State Statistics Service underlined. Russia's peasants gathered 22.2 percent of the total grain harvest, the document underlined, adding that 12.3 percent of the sugar beet harvest, 27.5 percent of the country's overall sunflower harvest and 7.9 percent of the potato harvest accounted for the peasants.
