Tembec Inc. today announced that it is increasing its northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp prices in two markets on Nov. 1, the company said.
Its price for North America will increase by US$20/tonne, to $870/tonne, and its price for China will increase by $30/tonne, to $690/tonne.
Tembec’s announcement follows that of Mercer International Inc., which on Oct. 23 was the first to announce a Nov. 1 price hike for North America; other major producers have since followed, as well.
Also on Oct. 23 Mercer said it was immediately raising its Asia price by $30/tonne, bringing its China price to $690/tonne.
Today Canfor Pulp LP announced a $20/tonne Nov. 1 increase for Asia, bringing the price of its reinforcing-grade NBSK in China to $690/tonne.
Tembec, based in Montreal, produces NBSK at its 255,000 tonnes/year mill in Skookumchuk, British Columbia.
Tembec has a high-yield pulp production capacity of 805,000 tonnes per year, all hardwood, which it makes from aspen and maple species at three mills in Canada, including Temiscaming, Quebec (315,000 tonnes/year), Matane, Quebec (250,000 tonnes/year), and Chetwynd, British Columbia (240,000 tonnes/year). Starting the first weekend of September, it took an indefinite shut at the Chetwynd mill, citing softening market conditions.
