Spain's plastic production up 1.9% year-over-year to 3.6 million tonnes in 2011, despite 4.2% decrease in plastics demand, report says; packaging accounts for 46.6% of demand
MADRID , October 15, 2012 (Revista de Plasticos Modernos) – The results of a preliminary analysis of the plastics industry in 2011 have been presented by PlasticsEurope. At a global level, plastics production reached almost 280 M tonnes, 4% more than for 2010. In Spain, plastics production rose by 1.9% to 3.6 M tonnes. There are currently some 4000 companies in Spain's plastics sector, providing over 73,000 jobs. Demand for plastics in Spain fell in 2011, by about 4.2%, and polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC, polystyrene and PET accounted for 72% of that demand. During 2011-2012, plastics exports rose by 4.6%, with EU member states being the main trading partners (two thirds of Spain's plastics exports were destined for EU countries). In terms of applications, 46.6% of demand for plastics in Spain was for packaging, followed by construction applications (14.9%), automotive applications (8%) and agriculture (5.5%).
