ENDERBY, United Kingdom , August 1, 2012 (press release) – Leicestershire-based recycling and waste management company Casepak is working with printer Artisan Press to help it reach its zero waste objective within the next 18 months.

Artisan Press is one of the UK’s largest, fully independent web offset printing specialists. The company prints a variety of catalogues, magazines and brochures, operating 365 days a year around the clock. With six web offset presses and six binding lines operating across three sites, Artisan has relied on Casepak to provide recycling services for all of its recovered paper, card and plastic packaging for the last three decades.

However, with landfill becoming increasingly expensive and environmentally unacceptable, the Artisan team was keen to increase the volume and variety of materials recycled, with the intention of becoming a zero waste to landfill company during 2013. To meet this objective, Casepak has identified and is putting in place a phased strategy of small and simple efficiencies that will change the way the company approaches waste management.

“We’ve worked with Casepak for a long time,” explained Gavin Hall, Artisan’s Works Director. “Initially they helped us by collecting and recycling our segregated and compacted fibre, including white paper, printed material and also card. As we’ve grown, we’ve asked them to take care of more and more aspects of our waste management, from general office waste to food waste. They now look after not only additional materials such as plastic strapping but are also responsible for the installation and maintenance of our on-site balers, compactors and bins.”

The Casepak team is now reviewing Artisan’s residual waste with the intention of taking them on their final journey to zero waste.

“Our current recycling rate is just above 90%,” said Gavin. “Working with Casepak, we’re looking to achieve zero waste within the next 18 months.”

Throughout the course of the last three decades Casepak has continually invested in new technologies and equipment which have enabled Artisan to improve its recycling and waste diversion rates. Most recently an upgraded waste extraction system was fitted at one of Artisan’s sites to accommodate a new high speed bindery machine. The new dual compaction system has been installed to provide continual operation combined with a segregation process. This means that the dust resulting from the bindery process can be captured and formed into briquettes which can subsequently be used as a refuse-derived fuel for supply to an Energy-from-Waste facility.

Gavin Hall, Artisan’s Works Director, said: “We’ve worked with Casepak for a long time. Initially they helped us by collecting and recycling our compacted fibre including white paper, printed material and also card.

“As we’ve grown, we’ve asked them to take care of more and more aspects of our waste management. Our production never stops so it’s important to us to have the continuous support which Casepak provides.”

Mark Smith, Joint Managing Director at Casepak, said: “Casepak and Artisan Press have had a long and successful relationship and I am delighted that we will be helping Artisan achieve their zero waste goal.

“It’s great to see companies embracing zero waste. It is incredible how small changes in behaviour can hugely impact the amount of waste that is diverted from landfill.”
