BRIDGEWATER, New Jersey , July 5, 2012 (press release) – National Hot Dog Day (also known as Independence Day) came and went with Americans eating an estimated 150 million wieners – and if all were conventional hot dogs, a fat and sodium hangover with an astounding 2.4 trillion grams of fat and 82.5 trillion milligrams of sodium, not to mention the antibiotics given to most conventionally raised animals.

A new survey finds that 73 percent of hot dog eaters say that they want those hot dogs to be antibiotic and hormone free, and 81 percent would prefer wieners with a short ingredient list including beef, water, sea salt and spices versus one with items like sodium phosphate and sodium nitrite.

Applegate, the leading producer of natural and organic meats, is offering Americans a hangover cure for the dog that bit them: fun videos (one of them featured as the ad of the day in AdWeek) and a chance to win a year's supply of SuperNatural Hot Dogs that have half the fat and 40 percent less sodium than conventional hot dogs, made from animals never administered antibiotics or hormones. Consumers can visit www.whatsinyourhotdog.com from July 5 through July 9 and post comments on how to avoid a hot dog hangover. One commenter will be chosen at random for the prize.

More Survey Results The Applegate "What's In Your Hot Dog" Survey showed that two thirds (66 percent) of American adults have purchased hot dogs in the past month. Nearly eight in 10 (78 percent) have purchased hot dogs in the past three months. Only 9 percent of Americans claim to "never buy hot dogs."

About the Survey Survey was conducted by Toluna Omnibus with a national sample of 1045 US adults aged 18+, balanced on key demographics: age, gender and region with a margin of error of +/- 3%.
