LOS ANGELES , July 3, 2012 () – The number of U.S. restaurants that are owned by women rose 28% over the last five years, said Nation’s Restaurant News executive editor Robin Lee Allen during the 2012 Southwest Foodservice Expo, Nation’s Restaurant News reported July 3.

Women make up 58% of managers and first-line supervisors at U.S. restaurants, Allen noted during the “Providing Leadership and Inspiration to the Next Generation” panel.

Panel participant SVM Productions LLC President Sharon Van Meter said the hospitality industry was a good fit for women because of its flexibility.

Allen served as the moderator for the panel, which featured SVM Productions President Sharon Van Meter; Matt’s Rancho Martinez restaurant co-founder and owner Estella Martinez; and Puente Enterprises Inc. CEO, COO and President Gina Puente.
