U.K.'s Asda launches new gas-permeable film called Evap for its Jersey Royal potatoes, says it extends shelf life far beyond conventional films; company plans to start using it to pack its sprouts, tomatoes

LOS ANGELES , May 4, 2012 () –

Asda Group Ltd. has introduced a new film packaging for its Jersey Royal potatoes that the British supermarket chain says extends shelf life far beyond what is possible using conventional films, reported Packaging News on May 4.

The Leeds, England-based company believes that the new packaging “will change the face of fresh product retailing for good,” said Chris Jones, Asda’s technical manager. Asda is rolling out the film throughout its stores and plans to start using it for its sprouts and tomatoes, in addition to its potatoes.

The patented film, which is called Evap Environmental Packaging, was developed by Yorkshire, England-based Evap Environmentals Ltd., Packaging News reported.

The film’s unique formula and technology create a gas-permeable packaging that is optimally tailored and also aids in preservation throughout the distribution chain and on store shelves, according to Asda.

The Evap packaging has been well received by retailers because it offers a way to really reduce food waste, reported Packaging News.

Evap is a major development after many years of “research, reengineering and live trials” sought packaging that cut food waste while being cost-effective for the consumer, environmentally intelligent and practical for the supplier, said Jones.

Using the film has allowed Asda to “truly stand out from the crowd” by offering products that are not only the “best value, but will remain fresher for longer,” he said, Packaging News reported.

Evap packaging is also biodegradable and compostable, according to the company’s website.
