DHL to use rail network for consolidated freight containers moving from Bremen, Germany, to Hamburg und Bremerhaven instead of previous road transport, estimates company will save about 365 tonnes of carbon emissions per year

DHL Global Forwarding, Freight, the air and sea freight specialist within Deutsche Post DHL and one of the leading providers of road freight services in Europe, is making increased use of rail transport for the transportation of containers to the loading terminals of selected shipping companies. From now on, DHL will be using the rail network for consolidated freight containers which have to be transported from the transhipment facility in Bremen to the terminals of different shipping companies in Hamburg und Bremerhaven. Up to now, these containers were taken by road transport to the various sea freight terminals. By opting to keep goods off the road, the logistics company will be able to save approximately 365 tons of carbon emissions annually.

As much as 50 percent of a product's carbon footprint is generated in the course of transportation. The container redistribution facility in Bremen is one of Europe's most important sea freight transhipment centers. It is the base from which around 7,500 consolidated freight containers are transported to the terminals of various shipping companies each year. With rail transport proving its efficiency first of all in a trial phase from the beginning of April 2011 onward and then in regular operation, DHL is now offering the solution to other shipping companies as well.
The climate protection target which Deutsche Post DHL has set itself is to improve the CO2 efficiency of its own operations and those of its transportation subcontractors by 30 percent by 2020 (with 2007 as the benchmark year). The logistics group is well on the way to achieving this: Deutsche Post DHL has reached its interim target - improving its own energy efficiency by 10 percent by 2012 - ahead of time.
