CINNAMINSON, New Jersey , April 11, 2012 (press release) – Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are organisms that have had their genetic material altered using genetic engineering techniques. Often, recombinant DNA technologies utilize DNA components from other sources to combine them to create a new set of genes that are then transferred into the GMO.

GMOs have been controversial since their inception. Some consider the changes made to an organism’s biological state to be unethical. Others feel that science does not yet fully understand potential safety issues of GMOs entering the food chain. Some groups believe all GMOs should be banned, while others have called for mandatory labeling of these products.

There are many uses for GMOs in today’s society. They include biological and medical research, production of pharmaceuticals, gene therapy and agricultural uses. A number of food crops have been engineered to take advantage of GMO technologies to be able to do such things as produce their own pesticidal proteins. Genetically engineered animals have also been developed.

Recently the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received over one million comments regarding a petition to label genetically engineered foods. The FDA has responded to this controversial topic by stating that they hope to review the petition and respond in the near future.

“Food labeling for GMOs, much like standard nutritional labeling, provides consumers with information about what they are purchasing and feeding their families,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “As one of the leading food labeling laboratories in the nation, EMSL has the DNA testing capabilities and nutritional labeling expertise to help industry, government regulators and consumers analyze what is in the products they buy and consume,” he continued.
