DHL opens new logistics center near Milan, Italy; 26,000-sq.-meter warehouse features dedicated areas for specialized services reinforcing specific industry logistic strategy

DHL Global Forwarding, Freight, the air and ocean freight specialist within Deutsche Post DHL and one of the leading providers of road freight services in Europe, has opened a new logistics center near Milan, Italy. With a total ground territory of more than 83,000 m2 and warehouse space of 26,000 m2 this facility unites DHL Global Forwarding and Freight under one roof and will serve as the central terminal for both business units in Italy. Concentrating the competences of the two DHL entities and consolidating DHL's presence in the region, a total of 500 employees will share 10,000 m2 of office space.
The new warehouse has 116 doors for loading and unloading, with ramps, one bridge crane, a dedicated area for air pallets, a semi-automatic multi-level warehouse for garments (on hangers), a temperature-controlled cell for cross-docking Life Sciences products, and a dedicated area for hazardous goods. Through this 40 million euro investment, DHL customers will benefit from simplified operational processes, improved offers for intermodal services and even faster delivery times.
Best infrastructure for air and sea transport in Italy
"Our new logistics center is ideally situated in the strategically important region east of Milan, and provides the best infrastructure for air and sea transport in Italy. With dedicated areas for our specialized services, we are reinforcing our strategy to focus on the specific logistics needs of our various key industry sectors. The new automated vertical storage system for hanging clothes is designed to meet the needs of the Fashion industry. For the Food and Life Sciences sector, we have provided a refrigeration system meeting international standards to conserve their highly sensitive products", says Thomas Nieszner, CEO DHL Global Forwarding Europe, Middle East and Africa.
DHL Global Forwarding handles around 41,000 TEUs FCL (Full Container Load) of ocean freight, more than 110,000 cubic meters LCL (Less than Container Load) of ocean freight and 40,000 Tons of air freight per annum at the logistics center, a total volume comparable to the flow of water over the Niagara Falls for one minute. Across the whole country, DHL Global Forwarding Italy handles 180,000 TEUs FCL (Full Container Load),113,000 cubic meters LCL (Less than Container Load) of ocean freight and over 65,000 tons of air freight.
Unique preconditions
With its strategic location, the new hub will function as a fast gateway for airfreight, export and import flows. At the same time, ocean freight can be consolidated and deconsolidated centrally at this point of intersection, with rapid access to various harbors. This set up offers unique preconditions for 85 weekly arrivals and 205 weekly departures by air, in addition to weekly groupage traffic by ocean freight, with 250 destinations and 70 points of origin.
"The hub in Pozzuolo Martesana serves not only as a flagship for our logistics excellence, but also for our GoGreen environmental protection program. We reach an estimated reduction of facility and transport CO2 emissions of 18 per cent at the new site. 13 per cent of which can be traced back to an improved road network and a reduction of both transit time and the average fuel consumption", adds Amadou Diallo, CEO DHL Freight.
State-of-the-art solutions for the logistic sector
DHL Freight dispatches 120 full trucks and fleet cartage vehicles on a daily basis and 810,000 tons of road freight per annum and will take advantage of the new hub to consolidate its domestic and international network activities. Having the customers' needs in focus was one of the main factors in the decision to build these premises. The logistics center near Milan, with its dedicated special areas and equipments, is not only state-of-the-art for the logistic sector but is also situated in a strategically important position between two main highways. This will allow DHL Freight to offer best-in-class solutions for the leading Italian export sectors, but will also play an important role in the vital import stream from many European countries.
