LOS ANGELES , March 30, 2012 () – Stora Enso Oyj of Finland has announced that it will increase its April 1 northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp price in Europe to US$870/tonne, according to a knowledgeable source.

The announcement was made on March 29.

This follows the same announcement this week by several other major European NBSK producers, led by Sweden’s Södra Cell AB. Others known to have announced are Mercer International Inc. and Metsä Fibre Oy (formerly Botnia).

The producers haven’t specified the amount of their increase. NBSK producers were trying for a price of $850/tonne in March, generally up from $830/tonne in Northern Europe, although reports so far indicate that some pricing in Northern Europe has settled more in the $840-$845/tonne range, and that Italy’s pricing continues to lag pricing in the North.

Stora Enso has mills in Skutskär, Sweden, Sunila, Finland and Uimaharju (Enocell), Finland.
