LINCOLN, Nebraska , March 20, 2012 () – The Nebraska Department of Agriculture is seeking grant proposals that could help make it easier to produce tree nuts, dried fruits and other specialty crops.

Department Director Greg Ibach says the request is part of a state plan to increase the competitiveness of Nebraska's specialty crop industry. It's part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's specialty crop block grant program.

Nebraska's department will award the grants competitively, based on a review of concept proposals. The proposals will be ranked competitively, and the top proposals will be asked to complete a second state and federal application.

Specialty crops include fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture and nursery crops.
