Södra Timber's Kindasågen sawmill in Kisa, Sweden, expects investment in Opcon Bioenergy's SRE Renergi flue gas condensation equipment to boost output of 14-MW biomass-powered boiler by 2 MW, while reducing particulate emissions
March 14, 2012
– Opcon Bioenergy, a subsidiary of Opcon, the energy and environmental technology Group, has received an order to supply its leading SRE Renergi flue gas condensation equipment to Södra Timber AB’s Kindasågen sawmill in Kisa, Sweden. The sawmill, which supplies pinewood timber, currently operates a 14 MW biomass-powered boiler, which in addition to supplying energy for the sawmill also supplies eco-friendly district heating to one of the district heating networks operated by Tekniska Verken in Linköping, Sweden.
Opcon’s flue gas condenser will further improve the energy efficiency of Kindasågen sawmill and utilize waste heat that was previously not exploited. When the installation is completed in 2012, Södra will be able to increase its supplies of eco-friendly district heating from Kindasågen by around 2 MW without having to use more fuel. The installation will also reduce the entire sawmill’s emissions of particles significantly.
“This is yet another stage in the extensive efforts Södra is making to reduce our environmental impact and our energy consumption. This solution not only has economic benefits, it’s also good for the environment because we are cutting our emissions and we can supply more bioenergy to the district heating network,” says Dan Forslund, site manager, Södra Skogsägarna.
“Globally there are enormous opportunities for increasing energy efficiency and reducing emissions by recycling waste heat, and this is just one example of the solutions we can offer. I am happy to help a company like Södra, which is already very active in this field. Södra has worked for many years to reduce its environmental impact and increase its production of renewable energy,” says Rolf Hasselström, President and CEO of Opcon AB.
Delivery is planned for the summer 2012.
Södra is a Swedish group that is owned by 51,000 forest owners in southern Sweden. The group aims to secure deliveries of forest materials and support the profitability of members, who also own an extensive forestry business that is active on the Swedish and international markets through, among other activities, five pulp mills operated by Södra Cell and nine sawmills operated by Södra Timber.
Opcon Bioenergy is part of Opcon’s Waste To Value initiative with a special focus on Waste Heat Recovery and bioenergy. Within the bioenergy sector, Opcon Bioenergy offers everything from the design of complete combined heat and power (CHP) plants to handling systems and incineration plants under the Saxlund brand. Under the SRE Renergi brand, systems are supplied for treatment and improved energy efficiency for bioenergy-powered district heating plants, sawmills, pellets producers and commercial greenhouses. The offer also includes flue gas condensation equipment for industrial activities as well as drying systems for biomass. The Opcon Group also supplies Opcon Powerbox for production of green electricity produced from hot water or wet steam.
