ISTANBUL and MUNICH , March 7, 2012 (press release) – The printing and packaging company Halaman Printing and Packaging Ltd., from Istanbul, is now offering its customers the option of printing orders climate neutrally. This makes them the first Turkish printing and packaging company to have calculated their carbon footprint and offset carbon emissions with investments, upon customer request, in recognized carbon offset projects. The company is working with the renowned climate protection consultancy ClimatePartner to do so.

Since its foundation in 1977, the Turkish company Halaman Printing and Packaging Ltd., situated in downtown Istanbul, has been specialized in printing and producing packaging and labels for the textile, cosmetics, food, and pharmaceuticals industries. Its regular customers include numerous international brands such as Adidas, Nike, and Sisley. For years now, Halaman Printing and Packaging has been active in environmental and climate protection applying measures such as green energy, FSC certification, using paints and inks free of mineral oils, and producing printing plates with as little use of chemicals as possible. Now, the company is also offering its customers the option to order climate neutral print products.

The basis for climate neutral printing consists in the accounting of the company’s relevant greenhouse gas emissions. The climate protection consultancy ClimatePartner calculated the so-called carbon footprint for Halaman Printing and Packaging according to established international standards. Emissions-relevant data such as electricity, heating, vehicle fleet, business travel, etc. are all included in the carbon footprint specific to the company. Using this data as a starting point, ClimatePartner configured an individualized carbon calculator, which the Turkish company can use to calculate and itemize the emissions from customer orders transparently. In addition to paper grades and types of ink used, the carbon emission factor for moistening and cleaning agents as well as the printing process itself are calculated individually.

Carbon emissions that cannot be avoided over the short-term can be offset by investing in recognized carbon offset projects. Carbon offset projects are systems for generating renewable energy (such as wind power) or saving carbon emissions (such as reforestation) that effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a verifiable manner. Emissions that cannot be avoided on a local level are offset by saving that same volume of emissions at another location. This offset leads to so-called climate neutrality and is realized using carbon credits from carbon offset projects meeting strict international criteria. When ordering climate neutral printing products, Halaman Printing and Packaging customers can individually select a carbon offset project from a portfolio.

Orders that have been printed climate neutrally are distinguished by the label “climate neutral print” with an individual ID number. By entering this ID on the ClimatePartner website, anyone can review the amount of carbon emissions generated during the printing process and which carbon offset project was selected for carbon offsetting. ClimatePartner’s entire IT-based process is certified by the technical inspection authority (TÜV), from collecting emission-relevant data to accounting and compensating emissions.

“As a family founded company, we place great emphasis on sustainable production and would therefore like to continuously expand our efforts in environment and climate protection. Offering climate neutral printing products represents an ideal supplement to our previous efforts. We would like to offer our customers not only the newest technologies and highest quality possible, but also enable them to make their own contribution in climate protection,” explains Mert Halaman, Senior Vice President at Halaman Printing and Packaging.

“Climate neutral printing is a topic of increasing relevance on an international level. Due to great demand, we are continuously implementing further steps to expand ClimatePartner’s services abroad. Today, our IT solution for climate neutral printing is already available in seven different languages. I am very enthusiastic to be working with Halaman Printing and Packaging, also because they represent our first Turkish company among our clients,” says Tristan A. Foerster, CEO at ClimatePartner.
