U.S. based-Oasis Brands cutting supply ties to APP for branded retail products, says tissue products will be made from FSC-certified base paper sourced domestically in response to company goals, customer demand for sustainability

WINCHESTER, Virginia , March 1, 2012 (press release) – Oasis Brands today announced its branded retail tissue products will be made from FSC-certified base paper sourced domestically. In addition, previous supply ties to Asia Pulp & Paper-Indonesia are being dissolved. This decision was made in response to company goals and customer demand for sustainability assurance.

“Our commitment is to serve our customers, our loyal consumers and to protect over 300 jobs across the United States that our operations have created,” said Philip Rundle, CEO of Oasis Brands.

Oasis Brands is in the process of identifying and contracting domestic base paper sources. The transition is underway and will occur through the second quarter of this year. “This is a major change by our company, and, over time, we will be implementing similar sourcing strategies across our other lines of business. We will be making announcements regarding timing, paper sources and our overall business plans in due course,” said Rundle. The company will honor and maintain contracts to convert base paper at Mercury Paper and Solaris Paper USA mills.

“We were able to create the Fastest Growing Retail Brand in the United States because we identified an unmet need for one brand across multiple categories with a simplified value equation and better margins for customers than our competition was willing to offer. We are confident that sourcing domestically will not change that proposition,” Rundle said.

Oasis Brands is in a prime position as a new player to the tissue industry to be able to source enough FSC-certified base paper to meet all its branded retail product needs. The customer demand for tissue that is certified sustainable exceeds supply of FSC-certified paper, and alternative certifications, such as PEFC and SFI, will continue to play a role in the US. “Our ultimate goal is to meet all our branded retail product needs with FSC-certified paper,” said Rundle.

Oasis Brands continues to believe that rapidly renewable fiber from sustainably managed plantations along the equatorial band is a vital strategy to meeting tissue demand for the world’s growing population. “Sustainability assurances are important across all the categories we operate in,” said Rundle. “We continue to urge the industry to work toward more certification of sustainably managed forest and plantation operations worldwide.”
