A new idea that would make it easier to recycle single-use plastic bags might be considered by the city of Austin, Texas, as an alternative to possibly adopting a ban on the bags, reported KVUE-TV on Feb. 23.

“Bag the Bag” was suggested by a worker at Texas Disposal Systems in Hays County who realized that the bags were difficult to recycle because they are singly mixed in with other recyclables and get stuck in processing equipment.

However, if they are stuffed together in a bag that is strong enough to hold them together they would be easier to recycle, according to Adam Gregory’s idea. The tougher bags could be bought or supplied by the city, KVUE-TV reported.

Potentially all film plastics, not just the bags, could be added to Austin’s blue box curbside recycling program using such a system, Gregory said.

The city council is set to consider a ban on the bags at its meeting on March 1. Last week, Austin’s Zero Waste Commission voted unanimously in favor of banning single-use bags and for passing it along to the city council, reported KVUE-TV.

However, Gerard Acuna, chairman of the commission, thought that the council members would give the “Bag the Bag” proposal serious consideration as it might be a more cost-effective way to deal with the plastic bags.

Texas Disposal Systems handles 300 tons per day of recyclable materials from Austin and 80 other communities.
