UAE's Ministry of Economy to begin taking cans of Coca-Cola, Pepsi off shelves at retail outlets for reducing can size without approval

LOS ANGELES , February 21, 2012 () – The United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Economy will begin taking cans of Coca-Cola and Pepsi off shelves at retail outlets for reducing their can size without approval, Gulf News reported Feb. 21.

Hashem Nuaimi, head of the Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy, said the companies requested that they market their 355-milliliter cans with a price printed on them. However, the companies then took the price tags off the cans and reduced the size to 300 milliliters.

The move violates the nation’s consumer protection laws, Nuaimi said.
