FEDERAL WAY, Washington , February 1, 2012 (press release) – Weyerhaeuser's new product enables cost-effective one-hour fire-rated assemblies for multi-family projects, and a simplified approach to comply with single-family fire protection requirements

Weyerhaeuser introduces another innovation to its popular Trus Joist® TJI® joist line—Flak Jacket™ protection. Flak Jacket protection includes a specialty coating the company applies to TJI joists to enhance their fire resistance. This new TJI joist option provides builders with a simple, cost-effective way to achieve one-hour floor/ceiling assemblies and to comply with the new 2012 IRC fire protection requirements. The product is durable and does not require special tools or training to use—builders can cut and drill the joists as usual, and use standard hangers for quick and smooth installation. www.woodbywy.com

In multi-family buildings, TJI joists with Flak Jacket protection provide a one-hour fire-rated assembly with only a single layer of gypsum and no expensive mineral wool. The protected TJI joists also meet 2012 IRC R501.3 fire-protection requirements in single-family homes. This means, when TJI joists with Flak Jacket protection are used in unfinished basements of single-family homes, there's no need to install gypsum or wallboard.

As with other TJI joists, Weyerhaeuser provides a limited lifetime warranty on TJI joists with Flak Jacket protection. The protected joists will be available in multiple series and depths to meet a range of load bearing requirements.

Trus Joist TJI joists are part of Weyerhaeuser's full range of products and services for quality floor systems. Other industry-leading floor products include Trus Joist TimberStrand® LSL rim board, Trus Joist Parallam® PSL beams, Weyerhaeuser Framer Series® Lumber and Weyerhaeuser Edge Gold™ floor panels. The company's TJ® Pro Rating System provides building professionals with an accurate way to predict floor performance before starting construction. Designers and builders can use the ratings to analyze multiple options for joist size, spacing, and span, along with floor panel thickness to choose a floor system configuration that best meets the homeowner's needs and budget.
