Construction has begun on the US$50M Hairy Hill ethanol plant, phase two of a plan to create an integrated biorefinery that combines an ethanol plant with an existing waste-to-energy biogas plant, Edmonton Journal reported Jan. 26.
The ethanol plant will mill, cook and process 110,000 metric tonnes of locally sourced high-starch feed grain from area farmers with yeast and enzymes to produce 40 million liters of ethanol. Combined with the biogas plant, the refinery will yield the lowest carbon footprint ethanol worldwide.
The process involves making the ethanol but subtracting the starch, leaving behind protein, fats, minerals and fiber for the cattle feed, explained co-founder Evan Chrapko. The cattle also produce 250 tonnes per day of cow manure for the existing biogas plant, which also takes waste and sewage from a nearby slaughterhouse and canola plant to make fertilizer. The heat and energy from the biogas plant will be used to power the BECii Clean Energy Centre and do business as Growing Power Hairy Hill L.P.
