The possible closure of its printing operation in Ebbw Vale, Wales, was confirmed by AGI-Shorewood, a packaging unit jointly held by Memphis, Tennessee-based International Paper Co. and Greenwich, Connecticut-based Atlas Holdings LLC, reported BBC News on Jan. 26.
A consultation process in which the workers will be kept fully informed is under way and is expected to continue until Feb. 21. About 60 jobs are at stake.
AGI-Shorewood, which makes packaging for CDs and DVDs, blamed the threatened shutdown on the downturn in media packaging demand. As a result, the Ebbw Vale plant has been “loss making,” said a spokesperson, BBC News reported.
Closing the plant would provide an opportunity to consolidate and optimize the operations and resources of the business, the spokesperson said.
If the plant closes, the work will be transferred to AGI-Shorewood’s operations in Slough and Swindon, both in England. The Ebbw Vale plant makes packaging for CDs, DVDs and computer games, reported BBC News.
Three weeks ago, Shorewood Packaging announced that its locations would all be grouped under a new unit called AGI-Shorewood, which is a merger of Shorewood with AGI World, a major global specialty packaging company.
The merged company created a global specialty packaging business with 24 manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America. It has five injection molding operations in the U.S., U.K., Germany and Poland, BBC News reported.
