Pennsylvania's egg production down 1% year-over-year to 620 million eggs in December, USDA says; average output reaches 2,456/100 layers, down 32 eggs from last year

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania , January 25, 2012 (press release) – Egg production in Pennsylvania during December 2011 totaled 620 million eggs, down 1 percent from the 626 million eggs produced in December 2010, according to the Pennsylvania Field Office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The total number of layers averaged 25.2 million during December, about the same as last year. Production per 100 layers was 2,456 eggs during the month, a decrease of 32 eggs overall from December 2010. Broiler- type chicks hatched in Pennsylvania totaled 14.0 million during December 2011, a 2 percent decrease from the number hatched in the same month a year earlier.

U.S. egg production totaled 7.93 billion during December 2011, up slightly from last year. Production included 6.89 billion table eggs, and 1.04 billion hatching eggs, of which 973 million were broiler-type and 68 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during December 2011 averaged 338 million, down one percent from last year. December egg production per 100 layers was 2,344 eggs, up one percent from December 2010.

Egg-type chicks hatched during December 2011 totaled 38.9 million, up 3 percent from December 2010. Broiler-type chicks hatched during December 2011 totaled 760 million, down 3 percent from December 2010. There were 23.5 million net poults placed during December 2011 in the United States, up 4 percent from the number placed during the same month a year earlier.
