According to Lu Anne Williams, the head of research at Innova Market Insights, chocolate producers are likely to emphasize both “pure” and green product labels as well as information on product origin in 2012, ConfectionaryNews.com reported Jan. 23.
Williams said that labeling a product as “pure” or “natural” can indicate authenticity to consumers.
She noted that consumers are beginning to take it for granted that companies are attempting to enact less environmentally damaging or more sustainable policies and that “[i]t’s not a choice anymore.”
Including information on product origin helps consumers feel more connected to the product, Williams said.
Other trends that Williams expected to emerge in the chocolate industry in 2012 are: more emphasis on premium chocolate; increased attention toward senior citizens; more emphasis on chocolate’s health benefits; and products with small portion sizes. She also expects that increased regulation will result in increased product activity, that small chocolate companies will establish themselves in various health niches, and that there will be an increased emphasis on energy bars and high protein cereal with chocolate.
