BURLINGTON, Vermont , January 11, 2012 () – It's going to become illegal to smoke in much of the downtown of Vermont's largest city.

The Burlington City Council voted Monday to ban outdoor smoking in most of the downtown between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

The ban exempts outdoor cafes and private alleys.

Public health concerns over secondhand smoke drove the 8-to-6 vote in favor of the new law.

Council Joan Shannon says the ban isn't perfect. She calls it a compromise that will probably have to be revisited.
