South Pacific Waste Recyclers, a unit of Charan Jeath Singh Group, is preparing to start up its new recycled-content tissue mill in Laucala Beach Estate, Fiji, reported The Fiji Times Online on Dec. 23.
The 4.5-million-Fijian-dollar (US$2.5 million) mill will sell its output as the Nambawan brand of toilet tissue. Sales will be strictly local at first, but exports will start in six months, said Charan Jeath Singh, owner of the Suva, Fiji-based company.
The toilet paper will be made from locally sourced, used paper that would have ended up in a landfill, said Singh, noting that there is “plenty” of this type of feedstock in the country. The Fiji Times Online reported.
The recycling business is viable in Fiji, Singh said. South Pacific Waste Recyclers began to collect scrap paper six months ago, including from The Fiji Times and Fiji Sun newspapers. The mill uses all types of paper, and pays $0.05 Fijian dollars per kilogram for it.
The mill is the first full-fledged paper recycling operation to officially open in the island country, said Fiji Attorney General and Minister for Trade Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, who toured the facility on Dec. 22, reported The Fiji Times Online.
Not only will the mill provide Fijians with lower-cost toilet paper than is now provided with imports, but it also will employ 50 to 60 people, said Singh. Employment at the mill is expected to grow as the business expands.
Fiji has a one-year zero duty policy in place for imported machinery that is intended to encourage local investment, said Sayed-Khaiyum, The Fiji Times Online reported.
