Czech Republic's Petainer selects 'sleek and classy' PET sauce bottle designed by U.K.'s Birmingham City University students as winner for second international design competition

AĆ , Czech Republic , December 21, 2011 (press release) – Specialist plastics packaging technology business Petainer ( has selected a design by students at Birmingham City University as the winner of the company’s second international student design competition.

The competition challenged students to develop innovative new ideas for a PET (PolyEthylene Terephthalate) container for juices and food.

The winning design detailed a sleek and classy table sauce bottle for ketchups, mayonnaises and other sauce-based condiments.

The winning sauce bottle design has the potential to be easily branded and allows a range of different sauce varieties to be packaged in the same way.

Students from Technical University in Liberec, Czech Republic, the University of Skövde in Sweden and Birmingham City University in the UK took part in the four week contest. Their task was to design an innovative container which has great shelf appeal and high levels of functionality but which also considers sustainability.

This is the second time Petainer has run its international design competition and plans are already in place to run the competition again in 2012.

Petainer chose winners and runners up from each university across two categories (juices and food) for the first stage of the competition.

Winners of each category at each university received a prize of 500 Euros and the second-placed team in each category received 100 Euros.

The winning design, by Chan Yung Khang, Yoan Dahan and Richard Barnett from Birmingham City University was chosen after much deliberation by Petainer judges. The 1,000 Euro prize for the overall winning design will be split three ways between the winning team.

“The design competition has given us an opportunity to engage with the brightest and best of Europe’s next generation of designers and it is something that we will continue to foster, and hopefully expand, in future.”
