LOS ANGELES , December 20, 2011 () – The U.K. Forestry Commission is hoping to improve timber supply in Northeast England for the wood-fueled renewable energy industry by offering grants to the region's owners of private woodlands, Bdaily Business Network reported Dec. 20.

The program would expand woodland capacity in the region by 50,000 hectares (123,550 acres), according to the article.

Many private landowners put off timber harvesting because of the high costs involved, such as in less accessible areas. The grants will help widen gateways and build new roads, and participants will be offered assistance with marketing.

The Forestry Commission currently produces 440,000 tonnes/year of timber in the Northeast, about one-quarter of all U.K.-grown timber, Bdaily Business Network reported.

The Forestry Commission's Ian Everard said the government's goals for renewable heating and energy are increasing demand for green energy resources, adding that woodlands are the country's “biggest untapped resource,”
