L'Oreal continues expansion into China with focus on sustainability, will produce 780 million units compared to 140 million in 2005 while reducing waste, greenhouse emissions, water consumption by 50% by 2015

LOS ANGELES , December 19, 2011 () – L’Oreal continues rapid expansion in China while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability, China Daily reported on Dec. 19.

L’Oreal has accomplished double-digit growth in China over the past ten years, making China L’Oreal’s third-biggest market. By 2015, L’Oreal plans to increase its production units to 780 million, up from 140 million in 2005, an average compound growth rate of 18.6%.

L’Oreal plans to achieve this growth while maintaining eco-friendly practices and transparent communication with consumers. In 2009, the company released environmental goals it plans to attain by 2015. L’Oreal China is on track to reach its goals by 2015, reducing waste, water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 50% apiece.

In 2010, L’Oreal reduced water consumption by 42% compared to 2005. Its waste recycling and utilization rate was 97.1% in 2011, up 40% from 2005.

Forty percent of L’Oreal’s product ingredients are from natural sources. Ecocert SA, a French organic certification organization, certified 500 L’Oreal ingredients.

In Shanghai, L’Oreal opened the L'Oreal Research and Innovation Center, which was awarded golden certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. At the center, L’Oreal conducts research to design products specifically for Chinese skin and hair.

L’Oreal also established a Consumer Caring Center, with 90 employees who provide information and advice to Chinese consumers.
