BMI is forecasting growth in all of France's freight transport modes in 2012. This will be driven by a projected 3.6% real growth in France's total trade (imports plus exports). It is noted that there is considerable risk to this. Going into 2012 the Eurozone debt crises are yet to be put to bed, with serious implications for France.

Tonnage carried on France's inland waterways is forecast to see growth of 2.0% in 2012, and to average 1.8% to 2016.
EUR4.5bn Canal to Bolster Green Credentials and Sarkozy's Popularity
In line with the EU's goal of moving freight off the roads and onto other modes of transport, France has launched one of Europe's largest and most ambitious engineering projects. It is hoped the EUR4.5bn Seine-Nord Canal will enhance France's environmental credentials while creating jobs and boosting the economy in post-industrial northern France.
