Michigan's sugar beet production forecast to fall 4.1% year-over-year to 3.67 million tons this year, USDA says; beet harvest 42% complete, down 14% from five-year average

LANSING, Michigan , December 8, 2011 (press release) – Michigan farmers report a slower than average harvest season thus far. Yields of corn, soybeans and sugarbeets are expected to be good, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. This report is based on conditions as of November 1, 2011. Highlights of the Crop Production report follow:

- Michigan forecasted corn yield at 148 bushels per acre is unchanged from the October forecast, and down 2 bushels from last year. Total production is expected to be 325.6 million bushels, up 3.4 percent from last year. If realized, this production will be a record. As of November 1, Michigan corn was 32% harvested. Michigan corn harvest lags the 5 year average by 13 percent.

- Michigan forecasted soybean yield at 44 bushels per acre, is unchanged from the October forecast, and up 0.5 bushels from last year. Total production is expected to be 85.4 million bushels, down 3.8 percent from last year. As of November 1, Michigan soybean harvest was 77% complete, on par with the five year average.

- Michigan forecasted sugarbeet yield at 24.6 tons per acre is unchanged from the October forecast, and down 1.4 tons per acre from last year.

Total production is expected to be 3.67 million tons, down 4.1 percent from last year. As of November 1, Michigan sugarbeet harvest was 42% complete, down 14% from the 5 year average.

Nationally, corn production is forecast at 12.3 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the October forecast and down 1 percent from 2010. If realized, this will be the fourth largest production total on record for the United States. Soybean production is forecast at 3.05 billion bushels, down slightly from the October forecast and down 9 percent from last year. Sugarbeet production is forecast at 28.9 million tons, down 9.6% from 2010.
