The Newark Group has signed a sale agreement for its dormant Haverhill Paperboard Co. facility in Haverhill, Massachusetts, though the new owner has not been disclosed, the Eagle Tribune reported on Dec. 5.
Newark Group’s vice president and general counsel David Ascher said he could not release more information about the sale.
Local officials have voiced a preference to see the riverside property used as a park or marina to promote recreational activities.
The Haverville Paperboard facility was built in 1902 and produced rolls of paperboard from recycled wastepaper. The Newark Group closed the plant in 2008, citing higher energy and operating costs. The closure affected 174 workers.
