MAIDSTONE, England , November 28, 2011 (press release) – DS Smith Recycling (formerly Severnside Recycling) has appointed Countrystyle to provide a total waste management solution to sister company, DS Smith Paper’s, Kemsley Mill in Sittingbourne, Kent. Countrystyle brings expertise in handling industrial waste from the paper manufacturing process enabling the company to deliver a sustainable waste management provision.

Kemsley Mill is one of three mills owned by DS Smith Paper which, combined, produce around 1.1 million tonnes of paper per year, making the company the largest papermaker in the UK.

Countrystyle will undertake the daily running of the programme, which also includes the segregation and recycling of all materials and the transportation of production waste to DS Smith Paper’s on-site CHP waste-to-energy plant, which provides heat and power to the mill. In addition, Countrystyle's sister company, FGS Agri Ltd., will be responsible for the removal of Effluent and RCF sludges generated during the manufacturing process, which are then reused sustainably for land spreading by the agricultural community and as a soil enhancer for crop growth.

Mathew Prosser, commercial director for DS Smith Recycling, comments: “The DS Smith Group is committed to being as sustainable as possible across all its businesses. Countrystyle has demonstrated it has the innovation to identify the best solutions for the waste produced at Kemsley Mill to improve sustainability and help minimise the operation’s carbon footprint.”

Mat Stewart, managing director at Countrystyle, adds: “We are delighted to have begun working with DS Smith Recycling. Kemsley Mill is a close neighbour to our Ridham recycling facility which means we can offer an innovative and effective waste management service. The nature of the waste produced at the site means there are challenges in finding sustainable alternatives to landfill, but it’s a challenge we’re meeting head on.”

As part of the recent restructure and rebrand at DS Smith Group, DS Smith Recycling is responsible for all waste management and recycling across the Group’s facilities.
