LOS ANGELES , November 25, 2011 () – Sapporo Holdings Ltd. began production of its “Sapporo Premium” beer on Nov. 24, in a brewery located in Vietnam’s Long An province, Mainichi Daily News reported Nov. 25.

The newly-built brewery, which cost 5.2 billion yen (US$66.9million), was constructed via a joint venture between Sapporo and a local firm. Sapporo holds a 70% stake in the brewery.

Sapporo plans to produce 40,000 kiloliters of its “Sapporor Premium” beer annually, which it hopes to increase to 150,000 kiloliters per year by 2019, at which point it hopes to begin exporting the beer to neighboring countries—including Malaysia and Singapore—in addition to marketing it in Vietnam.

Sapporo is the first Japanese beer maker to produce and market its own-brand beer in Southeast Asia. Previously, Sapporo, as well as other Japanese brewers, had marketed its own-brand beer in Southeast Asia by either exporting it from Japan or brewing it via a licensing agreement with a local firm.
