BONN, Germany , November 18, 2011 (press release) – FSC International is pleased to announce the election of new members to its Board of Directors, including a new Chairperson.

Pedro González Chaverri joins FSC from FUNDECOR in Costa Rica and will be representing the Environmental South. A graduate of the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica and the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, Sr. Chaverri brings over twenty-three years of experience in sustainable forest management and community organisation. FUNDECOR is a leading Costa Rican NGO committed to forest preservation and sustainable forest management.

Representing the Social North, Larry Joseph joins the FSC board from Canada. Larry has decades of experience in both indigenous community representation and the pulp and paper industry and played a leading role in representing Canada’s First Nations within Canada’s delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Larry has extensive FSC experience and is a trained FSC assessor.

Dr. Michael E. Conroy has been elected as the Chairman of the Board. His long and distinguished career in both academia and philanthropy will prove an invaluable source of guidance for FSC. Building on a 25-year academic career as a Professor of Economics at the University of Texas at Austin and later as a Senior Research Scholar and Senior Lecturer at Yale University, Dr. Conroy has taught about, researched, and written about the “certification revolution” that has created unprecedented transformation of global corporate practices on social and environmental fronts over the past 15 years. He has also spent a dozen years outside academia in the philanthropic world, first at the Ford Foundation and then with the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.

Chris van der Goot and Eric Palola, from Social North and Environmental North chambers respectively, both finish six year terms serving on the FSC Board of Directors. FSC would like to thank the departing board members for their dedication and leadership in helping the organisation grow into its position of excellence and we wish them all the best for the future.
