NEW YORK , November 17, 2011 (press release) – Alcoa (NYSE: AA - News) has been recognized as one of 21 model companies in Sustainability in Brazil by Exame, a well-known Brazilian business magazine, which publishes the country’s prestigious annual survey on corporate social responsibility.

This is the sixth time Alcoa was recognized for its sustainability efforts by the publication, which included being named the “Sustainable Company of the Year” in 2010, based on the successful start up of Alcoa’s bauxite mining project in Juruti. Exame has conducted the annual survey for 12 years.

Franklin Feder, President for Alcoa Latin America and Caribbean, accepted the award on behalf of more than 6,000 Alcoa employees in Brazil. “For Alcoa, where sustainability is part of our core businesses, being included in such a select group of companies makes us feel singularly proud,” Feder said.

This year, Alcoa was recognized for a project in the community village of Juruti Velho, located near Alcoa’s mining operations in Juruti. Ecooideia, a cooperative of social experts, is conducting a study to assess, the economic, social, cultural and environmental changes within the community.

The Exame ranking is coordinated by the Center for Sustainability Studies of the Getulio Vargas Foundation, which evaluates the strategies, commitments and practices of companies within the three dimensions of sustainability: environmental responsibility, economic/financial success and social commitment.
